Your Name/Artist Name

Shannon Andrew – Shan Andrew Art

Where are you based?

Bunbury, WA

What genre of art/photography describes your work best?

All things Ocean, Aerial and Landscape – using mediums of acrylic and oils on canvas, I hope to recreate the uplifting energy of coastal landscapes. I believe everything looks better from the air, and therefore my favourite creations are from an aerial view.

How did you get into your artistic pursuit?

My love for painting actually began with my love for photography. Travelling to many different countries over the last few years opened my eyes to the beauty of the world. Land based photography was always my favourite thing to do on the road, that is, until I got a drone. Seeing the world from the air soon became my new obsession – that is, until I started painting….

Painting initially started as a mindfulness task, but soon became so much more than that. I had an urge to paint the aerial shots I had taken, and therefore most of my paintings were initially inspired by the views from the air.

Motivations.

I am motived by Australian coastal landscapes and the ocean. The beach is and always has been my happy place. I believe it is important to surround yourself with things that make you happy, so that you can stay grounded amongst the chaos of life. To re-create a moment of time, with the energy of a place that makes me happy, means I get to feel that state of content every time I look at it. I hope that when others look at my art, they are able to reflect and connect in the same way.

How do you sell your work.

At present, I am only taking commissions and working directly with clients. I hope to expand my art practice more over the next year to sell both original and prints of my artwork locally in the South West, WA.

Favourite Fine Art Paper.

I LOVE texture. My favourite Fine art Paper is ‘Ilford Textured Cotton Rag 310gsm’.

Favourite artist/poet/author/anyone that you admire/influences you.

My favourite local artist who inspires my practice is Heidi Emma, who is located in Dunsborough. I love the way she uses oils for both her floral pieces and coastal landscape. Another influence is John Garde, who works from Tinkahill Studio in Bridgetown. He has been a positive influence to my recent practice; fuelling my drive to continue learning and practicing new skills to always keep improving.

Any words of wisdom/resources for other artists.

Don’t compare yourself to others. Do what feels good and motivates you, and others will naturally be attracted to this energy you provide in your work.

Future plans/projects.

I hope to create artwork for sale in local shops in the southwest, enter into a number of different exhibitions later in the year, as well as work towards a solo exhibition in 2021. I am open to collaborations and being challenged by new opportunities.
